Edward Scissorhands Review

This movie has the fantasy quality in the character Edward, meet with the nice and calm nature of everyday life, yet makes the fantasy portion seem more real. Let me explain: Edward may be just another monster made by Vincent Price, but he has the curiosity of a child, shy nature of a teenager, and the sensibility of a grown adult, making him a very likable character with very complex feelings, sort of like an alien lost on another planet. Edward is an amazing character, and since most of the movie is about him, this movie is brought to new heights, just reaching the 5 star mark. Not just that, but there are other things that really help this film reach great heights. The atmosphere was tremendous, with amazing sets that were surprisingly spacious, making you know that Burton worked really, REALLY hard on this. Also, the supporting cast was really good, especially Vincent Price as the inventor, but no surprise there, he's just awesome. Those are the things that are done almost perfectly, but this movie does have some flaws. For example, the supporting characters are really developed much, and when they leave the movie, they're never mentioned again. Also, some of the scenes are so cheery, it makes the more dark and degrading scenes more unsuspecting and annoying. It's the same thing that the movie "Chocolat" did wrong, except in this film, that flaw doesn't bring down the ENTIRE SECOND HALF (Sorry, I just hate the second half of Chocolat so much)! Now, the thing that's not really a flaw, but I just have to bring up. *SPOILERS!!!* Near the end of this film, Edward goes on a huge rampage, destroying a lot of the things he made. Now, I didn't mind that to much, but when he get's to the mansion, he get's into a fight with sort of a bully figure, and in probably the most gruesome movie scene that doesn't involve blood, Edward pushes the bully out of a window, and you see the bully fall to his death, with little to no cutaways... wow... imagine if kids saw that scene... I certainly by dramatized. Oh well, it's not much of a flaw, but it's basically a warning. *End of Spoiler* Overall, it's flawed at times, but it really is excellency. So if you're a fan of Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, anything dark, or just an excellent film in general, I don't think you'll be disappointed with Edward Scissorhands.

5/5
