Top 20 Films Of All Time (As of December, 2011)

By the time you read this, it'll probably be aged, as another movie could have entered the list by that time, but at least you can get a basic idea of what my favorite movies are. From least best to best, these are the 20 Best Films of All Time.

20. The Circus (1928)

Charlie Chaplin is definitely one of the greatest actors of all time, and this is one of his best roles. It's timeless and funny, likable and heartfelt, this is definitely a film that got slapstick comedy down right, with some outstanding drama thrown in too.

19. The Gold Rush (1925)

The second film of Charlie Chaplin to make the list. Exactly like The Circus, except this one was slightly better at atmosphere, drama, and comedy. One of Chaplin's very best.

18. American History X (1998)

Incredibly well done, and one of the few films you can call both brutal and heartfelt. Definitely a showing of what a human can do, and how far a human can go to learn about what's good and what's not.

17. The Lion King (1994)

Made for both entertainment and art. For kids and adults. This is the ultimate kids film, and sure, it has several flaws, but incredibly groundbreaking for both family films and animation.

True Grit (2010)

2010 was a great year for film, and this was one of the best of that year. Showing what violence and revenge can do to people, with some awesome action scenes and character studies. Groundbreaking for westerns in the classic style, and really taking risks, risks that make this film even better than it already was.

15. Inception (2010)

Just as groundbreaking and stylized as The Matrix, but with great characters, acting, and artistic visuals to back it up. Definitely one of the most thought provoking films in history.

14. Psycho (1960)

Outstanding in every way, Hitchcock's best, even surpassing "Vertigo". The acting, the story, the direction, it's all simply outstanding. The best horror film I've ever seen.

13. Citizen Kane (1941)

TO THIS DATE, some of the best direction I've ever seen in a film ever, which is shocking as Orson Welles was both the director AND the lead actor. Also, the story's great, the characters are very intriguing, and it's the definition of groundbreaking.

12. 12 Angry Men (1957)

The acting, the characters, the direction, the story, the intensity, it all makes the film a classic that should be cherished to this day.

11. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Extremely artistic and heartfelt, but with development and plot to help this become one of the best Tim Burton has ever done.

10. Winter Soldier (1972)

Reveals shocking facts about the war and the soldiers overseas, and people would have discovered the U.S aren't always the good guys if it wasn't banned until 2006, where it got a minor theatrical release.

9. On The Waterfront (1954)

A dark mob film that was really ahead of it's time, with some of the best acting I've seen in a long time.

8. Johnny Got His Gun (1972)

Not a horror film, but the scariest film I've ever seen... EVER. With likable characters and outstanding direction, this is definitely an underrated classic.

7. City Lights (1931)

Chaplin's films blow me away every time, and this is his absolute best. The first film I've seen from Chaplin, and the reason I still love watching Chaplin films to this day.

6. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

The characters are amazing, the story is tremendous, this is the best jail film I've ever seen.

5. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

An epic film where you connect with the characters and the story can really suck you in. A modern sweeping epic.

4. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)

It's amazing characters and story still lives in the hearts of fans.

3. Moneyball (2011)

I hated baseball before this, and was extremely interested in the sport afterwards. That's the lasting impression of the story, direction, and characters.

2. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

Visually stunning and the story really leads to amazing dramatic moments.

1. The Blues Brothers (1980)

A comedic masterpiece. An experience to remember for years.

What are your favorites?
